Today we started with the Smash App
Olympics and each group presented the apps they used to define UDL, Presumed
Competence, Assistive Technology, Convergence of Technologies and Disruptive
Technologies. This assignment was a great example of UDL because we were given
the assessment outcomes/expectations and we developed our own assignment
choosing to use whatever apps we wanted to.
This was a collaborative assignment where people worked together and
designed and demonstrated their own styles and skills. There was a lot of exploring of apps and lots
of hands-on learning on how to combine products from various apps in order to
present the outcomes assigned. Some of
my favorite apps that I saw people use were Telegami, Tooncamera (which I will
need more time to explore), wordle, videoscribe and iMovie. One of the things that I really enjoyed was
how people used their own real life experiences and knowledge to support the
material and develop the presentations.
This assignment/task is adaptable and assessable for all. You can use this kind of assignment for any
curriculum (life cycle of the frog to defining various terms) and for all ages
and level of learners.
Here is a link to our presentation. Hopefully it will work.

TedTalk-Notes The Myth of Average
Great TedTalk about how designing/teaching to the average is setting up people for failure because there is not average, everyone is different in their own unique way. It is important that we create to the edges so that we do not destroy learning opportunities or set people up for failure.
I know from personal experience that I need lots of room and flexibility when it comes to learning. I was never that student that could sit there and listen to a speaker and learn. I was that student that zoned out or used to get into trouble acting up from boredom. I love to go exploring and learn from experience. I need to try things out to master them and then I am able to teach someone else. The message from the Tedtalk was so true that when you teach to the average so many people are missing out and they are being set up for failure.
Great Candice...I agree we must teach to the edges and ban the average. We will be reaching all learners that way. Great blog posts
ReplyDeleteOh wow!! How were you able to get a copy of your presentation. Ainslie and I gave it a try and were unsuccessful. Ah well, at lease we tried!
ReplyDeleteCandice, thanks for sharing your experience as a learner who requires room and flexibilty. Your students are fortunate to have an insightful teacher who is able to reflect on her experiences as a learner. For so long, our brick and mortar, pen and paper schools, have stood in the way of providing engagment learning for all students. For me, learning about UDL and AT is giving me tools to help me provide room and flexibity for all my students.
